Mike Long, Tube Dancer

"New Addiction For The Masses"

Mike Long, aka " dipsetmuthafucka" on Youtube, is a multi talented guy with a great outlook on life. He's a musician, a comedian, and a video artist who also loves to dance. He's quite a fantastic dancer, and has recently completed a year long Youtube "tour de force" in which he videotaped himself dancing to a variety of classic dance tunes in various public places around his home of Hamilton, Ontario Canada. He videotaped a different dance every day for an entire year. It's a Youtube masterpiece!

"Up on the brow again with Mike Long, this time he's kicking it to some psych from the managerial master, Kim Fowley. Let's all take a trip together, just put your head back..."

The fact that he was able to produce a complete dance video every single day is quite an accomplishment in itself, but in addition to that the videos are really well produced. Most of the videos are shot in a single take with the camera on a well placed tripod that frames the dancing perfectly. This technique eliminates the distraction of changing scenes and really showcases the dancing. I think it's a much better way to show dancing than the more traditional fast cut music video style that is usually seen in bigger budget productions. Those videos are also great, but tend to show off the skills of the filmmakers more than the artists. You can't fake anything in a one shot video!

Mike has great taste in music and has chosen an eclectic variety of memorable dance tunes that transcend any genre boundaries. He dances to the song on location, and then dubs the clean track onto the video in post production. This guarantees good quality sound which usually is a great enhancement to a location dance performance. The ambient noises and tinny sound that usually go along with location dance performances can be annoying and distracting from the action.

Each day, Mike has chosen a different and unlikely spot around gorgeous Hamilton to stage his impromptu performances. He dances in the streets, in schools, the mall, public parks, supermarkets and other local shops. Bystanders often appear nonplussed and usually go about their business as if nothing out of the ordinary was happening. It's great!

Mike describes himself on his blog as a social rocktivist. He says he's anti-racist, anti-sexist, anti-homophobic, pro-choice, and a pro-party vegan. Sounds good to me. I don't know Mike, but he sounds like a very good hearted person. He says on his blog that he plans to videotape himself dancing all around the world for the next two years, and hopes to some day, "Walk Like An Egyptian" at the foot of the pyramids and dance on "Late Night". Well, who knows where all this dancing will take him! It's fun to watch Mike dance in different locations around Hamilton, and I'm looking forward to his future videos from wherever his dancing feats may lead.

Here's Mikes personally selected Youtube playlist featuring 28 videos that will play continuously. Wow, that's cool...Thanks Youtube! (Hint, "Break it out" opens new full sized window)
