"Cakewalk music was the Hip Hop of the late 1890s and early 1900s. It was one of the first music forms that had been invented by African Americans which was popular with both blacks and whites.

The cakewalk style was probably started as a mocking imitation by slaves of white slave owners. It evolved into white performers wearing blackface to imitate and often deride blacks. In New Orleans, one of the best known marching "krewes" of Mardi Gras are the Zulus. The Zulus are blacks who started wearing exaggerated blackface in the early 1900s as a way of mocking white people in blackface...who were mocking black people who were originally mocking white slave owners.

While many white performers in blackface did their best to rip off and exploit black culture for their own gain, it is also true that many whites back then were fascinated by black music and dance. The two excellent main dancers in this movie just seem to be enjoying the hell out of themselves. They don't seem to be intentionally trying to make anyone look bad (like so many blackface wearing performers did). Not to excuse them or anything, but sometimes things aren't always just black and white."Thanks eximod

I totally agree with Tommydan1. The commentary in this film is so obnoxious, it's beyond belief. The footage is awesome and there is some great interviews with Helen. It's also interesting to see the condescending attitude that was taken in this film. In some ways, the criticism of the films reminds me of the type of things people said about rock and roll back in the 50's and early 60's.

"James Newell Osterberg, Jr. (born April 21, 1947), better known by his stage name Iggy Pop, is an American rock singer, songwriter, and occasional actor.[1] Although he has had only limited commercial success, Iggy Pop is considered an innovator of punk rock, garage rock, and other related styles.[1] He is sometimes referred to by the nicknames "the Godfather of Punk" and "the Rock Iguana", and is widely acknowledged as one of the most dynamic stage performers.[1] Pop began calling himself Iggy after his first band in high school, The Iguanas.[2] His direct influence extends to the present day: a Cadillac ad in rotation since February 2007 features his vocal performance on the song "Punkrocker", recorded in 2006 with the Swedish band Teddybears.[3]

Iggy Pop was the lead singer of The Stooges, a late 1960s/early 1970s garage rock band who were influential in the development of the nascent heavy metal and punk rock genres. The Stooges became infamous for their live performances, during which it was not uncommon for Pop (who traditionally performs bare-chested) to consume narcotics, self-mutilate, verbally abuse the audience, expose himself and leap off the stage (thus being among the first to "stage dive"). Countless subsequent performers have imitated Pop's antics.

Pop has had varying degrees of success in the course of his subsequent solo career. His best-known solo songs include "Lust for Life", "I'm Bored", "Real Wild Child", the Top 40 hit "Candy" (with vocalist Kate Pierson of The B-52's)[2] and "The Passenger". A film about Iggy Pop's life and career titled The Passenger is currently in development."

Dil Se (Hindi: िदल से, Urdu: دل سے, translation: From the Heart) is a 1998 Hindi film directed by Mani Ratnam. The film was also released in Tamil as Uyire and Prema Tho in Telugu and stars Shahrukh Khan, Manisha Koirala, and Preity Zinta. Mani Ratnam also wrote the screenplay for the film. It was produced by Mani Ratnam and Ram Gopal Varma in conjunction with Shekar Kapur.

The film was shot in Kashmir, Assam, Delhi, Kerala and other parts of India and Bhutan over a period of 55 days. Its cinematography won a National Film Award for cinematographer Santosh Sivan. The film's score and soundtrack were composed by A. R. Rahman. A. R. Rahman received a Filmfare Award for the music. The film became the first Indian film to reach the Top 10 in the UK Box Office Charts, when released in 1998.[1]

The film was screened at the ERA New Horizons Film Festival and the Helsinki International Film Festival.
